Eggs for Later/Leap before you Look/Boffin & Boffin

These three short films all explore the issues of fertility and conception in the modern world. Whilst technology has advanced dramatically, some problems (such as finding the right reproductive partner, and preparing for parenthood) remain universal and timeless.

EGGS FOR LATER is a brave autobiographical account of one woman’s quest to ensure her reproductive future. Marieke Schellart captures on film her raw emotions as she realises that her biological clock is ticking, and her determination to do something about it. The scientific options are explored, and so the rollercoaster ride begins as Marieke discovers that the technology of freezing eggs is not legally available in her home country, the Netherlands. Conversations with Marieke’s friends and parents provide an important context, and engage the sympathy of the viewer. This is never a coldly clinical medical documentary, but a richly humanistic testament. Schellart was present to answer questions in a Q and A session after the screening, and described the encouraging and supportive response to her film so far.

LEAP BEFORE YOU LOOK is another uplifting autobiographical documentary, but from the perspective of a man who agonises about the decision to become a father, despite having a good relationship with his wife. Eventually, Stéphane realises that it is only fear of the unknown that is holding him back. BOFFIN & BOFFIN offered a humorous fictional scenario: that of two married fertility clinicians who are trying to conceive themselves, initially without success. This had the audience cringing in their seats, but was wickedly effective satire, and thus justifiable.
